In 1853, Brigham Young acquired title to all but one square mile of Rancho las Animas from Colonel Fremont and organized it into what would become La Canada Flintridge. The town was founded on December 11, 1912 when fifty families from Palmdale formed a new community called "Flintridge" after their hometown in England. The name comes from a local waterfall which locals call "The Rock". In 1957, La Canada Flintridge became an incorporated city with its own mayor and councilors- five men and five women- making it one of only two U.S. cities to do so at that time In 1978, after years of debate over whether or not to annex neighboring City of Industry into LaCanada Flintridge, Mayor James Rolph announced his city's annexation into LaCanada Flintridge on January 2nd 1978- making it the third city in San Bernardino County to be annexed by another municipality since its creation as an unincorporated community in 1912
