The project constructed 3 miles (5 kilometers) of canals and built over 50 dykes to regulate water levels in five Mexican rivers so that they could be used for agricultural purposes without flooding during times of drought or floods. On January 9, 1984 Kingsburg celebrated its 375th anniversary with a parade and picnic featuring patriotic music and local food items such as hot dogs and pie

It is part of the Bakersfield–Chico–Dominguez Hills Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kingsburg was founded by Mormon settlers in 1887 on a ranch that had been purchased from the Pahrump people by Hyrum Smith and his family. The town name means "site of meeting." In 1893, Kingsburg became an incorporated municipality when it consolidated with nearby Chico. Kingsburg's first mayor was George A. Whitehurst. Kingsburg experienced some major growth during World War II when a munitions plant was built there to make ammunition for the war effort. The plant closed after the war and the town lost its manufacturing/production base. However, since then, Kingsburg has seen many new businesses come and go as local industry shifted away from production to service economies such as retail and health care services. During this time, Kingsburg also saw significant construction activity due to its location atop an important railroad junction; the town grew rapidly because of this industrial heyday. Today, much of what once produced at the munitions plant site now flourishes outside of town in nearby Anza-Borrego Desert National Monument; however, some remnant industries still exist in Kingsburg including agriculture (a small dairy farm) and engineering (the remnants of two defunct factories that produced electrical components). The community has also enjoyed several years of prosperity thanks to its growing livability index which has increased steadily over recent years; in 2000 it reached 100%.Today's economy is based mainly on trade with other communities within Kern County as well as national markets outside of Bakersfield and Chico
