The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. The first permanent settlers in what is now Kingsburg were prospectors who discovered gold in 1848. In 1851 they organized a town charter and named it for King George II of England who had visited their area earlier that year. By 1870 there were some 200 people living in or near Kingsburg. A post office called Kingsburg was established in 1881, and remained open until 1915. A store and restaurant were built near the original town center in 1912, and remain standing today as part of the community's economy. In 1958 a dam across the Kings River caused extensive flooding which destroyed many homes and businesses within the town limits; however, most residents did not leave because they found other areas to live in while they rebuilt. The townsite was redesignated as an agricultural research station by then-Gov. Jerry Brown in 1978 after he came to power following passage of Proposition 13 which capped local property taxes

Its physical evidence includes severalhistoric buildings dating back to the early 1800s including the original courthouse which was built in 1878 by Gold Bug himself; the Post Office; and Central Storeroom where goods were bought from farmers throughout Kern County before being transported via wagon or stagecoach to Bakersfield or points east. Additionally, several new buildings have been erected over time such as libraries, schools, churches...the list goes on!
