Kingsburg was founded in 1874 by John Sutter and his family as a ranch community on 160 acres of land grant from Don Carlos Obispo. In 1896, Kingsburg became an incorporated town when it absorbed neighboring towns of Tomales (1906), Merced (1908), and Nacauex (1910). The original gun sights in Kingsburg were made by George Washington Dixon of San Francisco. In 1913, Mr. Dixon died; his son continued to make sights for guns until his death in 1944. At that time, George Dixon's son-in-law, Harry Wessels purchased the business from Mr. Wessels' widow and continued to make sights for guns until his death in 1978. The current owner of the business is Harry Wessels II who has been running it since 1978.
