Kingsburg began as a small community named Kingsbury on November 5, 1912, when a group of pioneers who had come from Donnersville founded a rancho called Kingsbury Ranch. The town was platted on November 20, 1915 by Hurd Wickersham as part of his purchase of the lands that lay east and south of Donnersville from David Haight and others. The name came from Captain James Kinyon's report that he had sighted "a great old Spanish mission" in what is now Kingsbury Mesa just north of the present day town square. The first post office opened in 1916; it was renamed Kingsburg in 1927 after General John J. Pershing became Commanding Officer Third Army during World War I and served as its first Postmaster General. On May 2, 1926, King's Valley Elementary School (now King's Valley Middle School) opened in nearby Springerville; it was one of two schools built within two years of each other in Kern County with public money provided by State Senator Hiram Johnson (D-LA). In 1937–38, local newspapers observed "the greatest housing development since subdivisions were introduced into this country." A year later developers Harry Weiser and Reuben Kilgore bought 1,500 acres () northwest of downtown for $2 million to build what would become known today as Northridge Manor Golf Course & Resort (later Northridge Country Club), which included an 18-hole golf course completed in 1951; also included were 9 restaurants including Lighthouse Cafe & Grill (now closed), nine motel rooms/condos totaling 137 units/, three shopping malls (), one convention center (), three water parks (), and four residential developments (). On July 4, 1960 – two days after Disneyland opened – Kingsburg celebrated its centennial with an event featuring live music by Joe Bonamassa and Chubby Checker at City Hall Park (). In 1962–63 residents established the East Kern Community Foundation to promote economic development within their area through grantsmanship., In 1969 scenes were filmed for The Beverly Hillbillies episode "A Place For Daddy" at Paramount Studios in Burbank while production continued at Northridge Manor Golf Course & Resort until 1971; resulting show averaged 15 million viewers per week throughout its theatrical run yielding $8 million worthof merchandising sales . Kingsburg has experienced significant growth over the years: According to 2000 census data*, it has increased from 707 people living there when incorporated to 8,521 residents today*.
