Kingsburg is a town in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 10,907 at the 2010 census. It is located on the south bank of the Kings River. Kingsburg has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years and its first post office opened in 1852. In 1881, it became part of the city of Fresno. In 1911, Kingsburg was annexed to Fresno and renamed after King George V of England. The townsite that now forms Kingsburg was founded by Captain James Ketchum in 1847 as an irrigation ditch from Tulare Lake through what is now the city of Fresno. Ketchum named his town for King George V because he felt that England had done more for American farmers than any other country during World War II. The first shop in Kingsburg was built on Pine Street in 1850 by Jepson Bros., a wagon-load of groceries imported from Boston via Sacramento . In 1861, when Californios began arriving from Mexico who had journeyed down the Central Valley to seek opportunity and gold, they began settling around what is now downtown Kingsburg near present day Yosemite National Park . By 1870 most of these new settlers were farmers with some sheep and cattle ranching also conducted hereabouts although there were no schools or hospitals until after 1906 when both Municipal Water District No 1 (MWD) and then Kern County took up these activities as well In 1881 MWD amalgamated with Kern County , creating one large water district which served all of southern California including Kingsborough proper as well as portions east and west of I-5
