King City, California is a city located in Kern County, California. The population was 21,844 at the 2010 census. King City is the only incorporated city in Kern County. It was founded on July 6, 1847 by brothers George and John Hargrave as a dry goods store and post office called "King City". The name was changed to King City in 1851 because of its location at the confluence of the Kings River and Yokuba Creek. The first settler in King City was Daniel Gorman who arrived on horseback from Missouri on July 5, 1847. Gorman's farmstead would become one of the most important sites in early King City because it served as a year-round stop for travelers coming down the Kings River. By 1850, other settlers had arrived and started building homes around Gorman's original storehouse. In 1851, the name of the town was changed to "King City" after its founders received notification from Governor Pio Pico that they were about to be annexed into Los Angeles County. In 1861, Mayor Elias Howe organized an election for mayor which resulted in George Hargrave becoming mayor with 97% of the vote. In 1865, Mayor John Atherton appointed Hiram Sasse as captain of police after Sasse successfully fought off three attempted robberies during his term as mayor. The next year saw another major event when two trains derailed near town killing six people and wounding many more including Mayor Howe himself who narrowly escaped death by being thrown out of a window onto a field below while attending a meeting with railroad executives nearby. During World War II King City became one of several small U.S.-based cities that furnished food for American forces stationed overseas through Operation Neptune Spear (1941). On November 2nd 1951 King City voted to become an incorporated city under state law 3 years earlier than planned due to increasing population growth rates within Kern County combined with an ever-growing demand for services provided by incorporation towns like KingCity such as water supply, education and fire protection services among others despite opposition from some local politicians who felt their authority within their respective communities should not be challenged by outside newcomers without proper planning or consent from their constituents . On January 1st 1957 incorporation took effect with businesses opening up shop and services becoming available to residents without having to leave their homes

King City is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 18,371 at the 2010 census. At the time of its incorporation as a city on November 3, 1907, it was one of the most populous cities in Kern County and was considered to be one of the wealthiest cities in Northern California. It has since been shrinked by population growth and development in nearby Bakersfield and Descanso. The first permanent settler in King City was George Emmons who arrived on July 4, 1847. In 1870 John Ladd purchased land in King City from Mexican settlers for $2 per acre ($40 per kilometer). Ladd also founded Bakersfield which became an important agricultural center due to its high quality water resources. The arrival of railroads made King City an increasingly commercial center with businesses such as lumberyards and shoe stores dotting the downtown area. By 1910 the population had climbed to 30,000 with many factories and businesses located around Main Street which still exists today as a vibrant shopping district known for its boutiques and art galleries. In 1916 Mayor Atherton announced that King City would be annexation into Bakersfield so that both cities could enjoy similar services including police protection and fire Alarm service
