King City is located in the Kern County of California, and was founded in 1849. The city was named after Captain James Fenton King who lost his life while exploring the area. It is home to the largest surviving Japanese American community outside of Japan. The city also has a rich knife history, which can be traced back to 1853 when W. H. Geary and A. J. Prendergast patented a saw blade that could be used for cutting wood or other materials. The first commercial knives were made in King City by Denny & Sonsmith Knife Company, which opened its doors in 1865. In 1984, King City became one of only four cities in California designated as "knives Manufacturing CENTER" by then-Governor Gray Davis following a policy shift by Davis that prioritized knifemaking over other traditional industries such as fishing and agriculture due to their importance within Californian society and economy). A few years ago King City's only store closed down due to an economic recession that hit most small towns hard during that time period; however, they have been able to rebuild and reopen with much success thanks to their community spirit which continues strong today despite difficult times. However, despite these challenges, King City has continued to thrive throughout its history with various redevelopment initiatives that have helped make it more vibrant today. One example is the renovation of downtown which began in 2000 and has since seen significant growth including new businesses, apartments, condos and a new park system called "The district". Additionally, King City has been recognized for its arts scene through several awards including being named one of "America's Great Cities" by Forbes magazine in 2006; being selected as one of Silicon Valley’s “Most Innovative Places” by Fast Company Magazine; and receiving accolades from both American Planning Assn (AFP)and AIA/Census bureau for having “the Most Stable Neighborhoods” among Upscale Urban Areas across 32 U States surveyed between 2002-2011).

In 1999, King City experienced a large fire that destroyed most of the town's buildings.
