In the early 1800s, King City was a small town located in what is now Fresno County, California. The town was named for Captain John Kingsbury who founded it in 1827. At the time of its founding, King City consisted of only about 100 people and had no school or post office. King City developed rapidly during the 1830s because of its importance as a port on the San Joaquin River and as a agricultural center due to its large acreage of oak and walnut trees. It became an important manufacturing center during this period with businesses such as saddles, cannons, wagon wheels, ovens, and other items being produced. In 1848, King City received city status which made it more powerful than any other community within Fresno County. This led to increased development around the city including the construction of roads and buildings such as a jail and fire hall. In addition to these improvements, King City also experienced significant growth in gun ownership during this time. At first there were only a few handguns owned by residents but over time this started to change as people began to see guns as an important tool for protection against crime and bandits. By 1860, there were over 1,000 handguns in King City alone! Additionally, throughout this period there were also substantial increases in gun violence both through accidents caused by firearms mishandling (such as when children handled unsecured rifles) and through gangster warfare between gangs of criminals using firearms to fight off their opponents. Today, King City is home to numerous institutions such as UC Berkeley and Atherton University which have helped make it an important center for higher education in eastern Kern County.
The first permanent settlement in King City was made in 1847 when the California Gold Rush began. The town quickly grew, and by 1870 it had a population of over 1,000 people. By 1881, King City had become an important commercial center due to its location at the junction of several wagon trails connecting the various gold fields in central California. In 1906, during the San Francisco earthquake, King City was one of the most severely damaged cities in Northern California. Many buildings were destroyed including the old courthouse which stood until 1922. However, thanks to donations from local citizens and businesses, reconstruction began immediately and soon finished entirely within two years. The new courthouse replaced an earlier structure that was also destroyed in the quake.
