The name "King City" continued to be used until 1872 when it was changed to Contra Costa County because there were not enough towns within Contra Costa County yet designated as cities. Today’s King City center has been developed over time with various annexations including Novato (1898), Brentwood (1913), Lafayette Heights (1939), Walnut Creek (1981), and Danville (1995). In 2000, Kings Canyon National Park was established within Contra Costa County boundaries making it an integral part of the park system.

The party consisted of 9 men including Alta Montaña and 7 women: 3 families from Albuquerque; 2 families from Tehuantepec; 1 family from Nuevo Laredo; 1 family from Santa Clara Valley; one man called José Gomez (Gomez) The town began to take form when Hiram Power established a wagon post nearpresent-day Academy Road about 1800 CE In 1853 two brothers - George Wetherill and James Ketchum - organized the first school board in Kings Canyon region which later became Riverside County High School District No. 1 In 1862 Chauncey Smith founded Jardine & Smith Watch Co., which soon became world's largest watch company with sales over US$1 million On December 12th 1870 Captain John Gage sailed upriver from Yuma Creek located today's downtown streetscape for what would be his last survey expedition along today's route sponsored by Doniphan McLaughlin under instructions then Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Drakebeck commanding Company C First California Regiment during Gold Rush era He discovered gold at various points along Sierra Nevada foothills adjacent to Sierras before reaching Redding on April 14th 1773 making him one of very few non Native Americans to explore these regions during this time period
King City was first settled in 1848 by the Mexican American War veterans, and became a part of California in 1850. The town was platted in 1852 by Captain John Sutter, who named it for his father, King George Sutter. In 1856, when California became an official U.S. state, King City became the capital of that state.
