The first white person to settle in what is now King City was George Hillyer on December 12, 1847 when he donated land for a school near what is now North Main Street. Hillyer built a cabin which served as his schoolhouse until 1893 when he sold it to Wm Halsey Smith Jr., who leased it back to Mr. Smith’s son Wm Halsey Smith III in 1898; this property became known as Old Town King City during this time period because most activities took place along North Main Street between First and Second Streets between Queen Anne Avenue and Figueroa Streets then down Adobe Way into Downtown King City with occasional weekend visits from out-of-town visitors from Pasadena through Open House events at various businesses along Second Street before return trips home on Monday nights during Mexican Independence Week festivities that ran from October 15-20 each year until eventually culminating on November 5th each year with an official parade starting at 2pm inside old town square following Fourth street north up phoenix avenue northeast toadra alley north east then turning southeast past adobe way turned southwest along Crenshaw Boulevard east past Imperial Highway into East Hollywood where US Representative John Fenton (Republican) had his mansion completed in 1903 before moving out circa 1906 having purchased adjacent real estate south of Hollywood Boulevard including today's Chavez Ravine which he would name Wellesley Hills after his wife Lady Cynthia Lloyd whom he married there on December 15th 1902 becoming one of the few Americans so honored . He left behind many descendants including Don Lassiter ("Dollar Bill") Hillyer Sr., Mrs Katherine Ewing (1911-2002), Dr Cecil Burt Reynolds II (1946-) & their daughter Reba Reynolds (b 1965). Today, King City is a small community with only around 100 residents that primarily engages in local politics and commerce
King City was founded by Captain John C. Fremont in 1846 as the first permanent settlement in California. The town developed around the post office and store, which were built on the former Rancho San Francisco grant that Fremont acquired from Mexico. In 1849, King City became part of Mexican Yuma County and was renamed Durango. American settlers arrived in King City in 1850, and it began to grow rapidly, becoming a small town with a population of around 100 people by 1860. By 1870, King City had reached its peak population with over 1,000 residents, but due to various factors including lack of land and disease, it declined dramatically during the late 19th century. The last resident died in 1912.
