The history of bipods can be traced back to when two American soldiers, Capt. John S. Hennessey and Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, were stationed in the town of King City, California during World War I. The two men became friends and decided to start a business together called the Bicycle Shop, which they operated until their death in 1924. In 1923, Captain Hennessey and Lt. Col. During World War II, many different types of bipods were designed and produced by the Kapp-Hennessey Company including the M1A2 Abrams tank bipod which was used on several US tanks such as the Sherman Tank and Patton Tank. The popularity of these products led to Kapp-Hennessey Company being bought by Raytheon in 1951 for $4 million USD. Raytheon continued production of these products until 1997 when they merged with Northrop Grumman Corporation to form Lockheed Martin Corporation. Bipods continue to be popular today both within the military and civilian market due to their versatile design and ease of use.
