Irvine is one of the most affluent cities in Los Angeles County and has been ranked as one of the top ten livable cities in America. The city's economy is based on its natural resources, including oil and gas production and tourism. Irvine was founded by Anglo-Americans who arrived during the Gold Rush of 1849. The first post office in Irvine opened in 1859. In 1860, a millrace ran through downtown Irvine and this led to its name: "The Millstream". At first there were few homes and businesses within the city limits; it was only after 1870 that development began to take place around what is now Jacklin Park Drive and throttle Street. The early years of Irvine were difficult for many reasons: The area had not yet been drained for farming or ranching, so there was little water available for mills which required significant inputs from outside sources such as labor, transportation, materials (salt and lime), and capital investment. However, with advances in transportation technology during the late 1800s (including locomotives) and early 1900s (such as by horseback teams) things changed quickly – by 1907 there were over 100 businesses operating within Irvine Limits! During World War II much of what exists today within Orange County came about due to military activity – especially naval shipyards located along Newport Beach Boulevard near Laguna Creek – which produced aluminum cans used to make tanks and aircraft wings; other industries that developed around these areas include plastics manufacturing adjacent to Naval Station Corona; small agricultural production; engineering support services provided to federal defense agencies such as Lockheed Martin’s facilities adjacent to Iverson Airport; high school education opportunities offered at various locations throughout Riverside County until major campuses moved into their current form some time ago – most notably Northridge High School which joined IUPUI on campus in 1984! Irvine also features a significant African American community dating back centuries with Atlantan slaves brought here specifically for plantations near present day Yorba Linda Village then transported onwards via riverboats all the way upriver past Saugus before landing on Angel Island where they disembarked opposite Fort Point Light - making this one stop along what would become known as "The Color Purple Trail" !!

They called their new settlement "Irvine." By 1870, there were over fifty residents in Irvine. Two years later, the town passed an act entitled "An Act To Make An Acre Of Land And Set Out A Post Office In It" which granted voting rights to citizens over 21 years old and gave them one vote per acre in municipal elections. On November 3rd, 1872, voters approved a charter for the city which read: "The people of Irvine voteth not but approves this ordinance." In 1888, Mayor William Kapp established firefighting services within the city limits which helped contribute to its success during World War I when many businesses closed down because they couldn't afford to pay for insurance premiums. Also during World War I, Irving built a military airfield just north of downtown that served as an important training ground for pilots from all over the world. After World War II ended, business began to rebound thanks in part to newly created jobs within communications technology companies such as AT&T and Xerox PARC (formerly Palo Alto Research Center). However, suburban development increased traffic congestion on main streets and it became difficult for citizens living west of Glendale Boulevard to get around without using public transportation or taking a bus or bike ride into town center where most stores and restaurants are located. Finally in 1994 after more than 20 years of debate between City Council members chaired by Mayor Bruce Ratner and then-Councilmember Don Knuths with assistance from consultants McKinsey & Company®, City Council voted 10-0to approve Measure M which would create new high-speed rail lines connecting Los Angeles with Anaheim through Chandler Heights/Irvine Station (now Fullerton) while also improving El Monte Avenue corridor through Newport Beach/Pomona Hills/La Crescenta Valley before terminating at adjacent Fullerton Airport approximately 8 miles southeast of downtown Irvines original boundaries
Irvine was founded in 1885 by James Irvine and his brother, John Irvine. The city is named for the Irish-born brothers who developed the land that makes up its present boundaries. In 1923, Orange County was formed from parts of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties and Irvine became a part of the newly created county. The county seat was moved to Burbank in 1957, due to growth within the new county.
