Gun targets have been a popular pastime in Irvine, California for over 150 years. The first gun target was built in 1881 by W.W. Hines and located on the east side of State Street. The original target was made out of a large piece of wood, which required the use of two people to place it correctly. It remained an important part of local shooting culture until the early 1920’s when shotguns began becoming popular. As shotguns became more common, gun targets were no longer as popular, and they gradually disappeared from the scene. In fact, only three remain standing today- one on Sutter Boulevard and two on East First Street within walking distance of each other. Today,gun targets are still enjoyed by locals and visitors alike in Irvine due to their unique history and popularity. They can be found at various locations around town including: the Irvine Public Library, Orange County Recreation & Park District Headquarters Complex (formerly known as Checkerboard Arena), Johnnie Cochran Stadium (home of the Los Angeles Dodgers), and several other businesses throughout our city limits. There are three primary types of gun targets: silhouette targets, dot targets, and bullseye targets. Sh silhouette target A silhouette target is a type of target that is designed to look like it is in front of the shooter. They come in various shapes and sizes, but the most popular shapes are circles and squares. A typical silhouette target measures about 18 inches wide by 24 inches long. They can also be made with different colors to help identify which side the shot came from. Dot Target A dot target is a type oftarget that has small dots placed on it so that you can see where each bullet hit the target. Thedot target comes in several different colors to help you identify which side the bullet came from. Most dot Targets measure around 18 inches wide by 24 inches long when complete. Some dot Targets also have an "X" shaped hole in them so that you can shoot through them without hitting anything else. Bullseye Target A bullseyeTarget is created using two or more round's drilled into one large surface such as an oak tree or a human head. When fired at close range, the rounds will all land within 12 inch circles around the bullseye shape on top of thetarget). Bullseyes vary in size but typically measure about 31/2-inches wide by 41/2-inch long when complete

Irvine, California is a city located in the San Bernardino County of Southern California. Irvine was founded on January 17, 1849 by George C. Marshall and his wife Jane Irwin. The town was named in honor of General Robert E. Lee who fought in the Mexican-American War and was President of the United States at the time. The city's population reached over 350,000 by 1950, making it one of the most populous cities in California. The City Council voted to change its name to Irvine on July 1, 1990 after voters approved a re-branding campaign that focused on economic opportunities and job growth within the city limits rather than historical associations with Lee or other war veterans. The new name reflected both Irvine's current location as an upscale suburban community adjacent to Los Angeles County and also its status as a "technology center." In September 2008, Orange County supervisors moved forward with plans for an $8 billion stadium project that would include an adjacent housing development called "New OC" which would be home to more than 10,000 high-end homes and apartments along with four professional sports teams: the Dodgers (who have been based in Los Angeles since 1951), Rams (based in Stroudsburg, PA since 1994), Chargers (based in San Diego since 1969) and Warriors (based in Oakland Coliseum). However, after much protest from residents living near Dodger Stadium who feared their homes could be razed if the stadium were built there and also concerns about traffic congestion caused by increased parking demand associated with such a large development project, Supervisor Roderick Johnson withdrew his support for the project on May 14th 2009 citing public opposition thereto as well as concerns aboutforumdiversityandinclusionwithinthestadiums themselves. After months of heated discussion between opponents and proponents of New OC - culminating with several arrests during protests outside Dodger Stadium - Johnson ultimately announced that he would not seek reelection next year but instead focus his efforts on developing legislation related to affordable housing developments throughout Orange County
