Irvine, California is a city in Orange County, California. It was founded on December 10, 1959 by American entrepreneur and developer Edwin E. Paull as the new community of Irvine Ranch. The city's population was estimated to be over 100,000 in 2000. In 2013, it had an estimated population of 113,868.[1] The city is located on the eastern edge of Anaheim Hills and shares borders with Huntington Beach to the north and Garden Grove to the east. The first people who lived in what is now Irvine were Native Americans known as the Tongva people. They were followed by Missionaries from San Diego who erected a mission in 1769 called Rancho Santa Ana de Anza (now part of Anaheim). The town began to grow around this mission until 1853 when John Sutter arrived here with his group of Forty Thieves seeking loot from Mexican land grants. He named his new settlement after himself – Sutterville – which became the nucleus for Irvine's economic development. In 1857, he sold some portion of Rancho Santa Ana de Anza to James Pritchard for $2 million dollars which made him one of Orange County's first millionaires[2]. In 1907, businessman George Wertheimer purchased 1/3 interest in Wernher von Braun’s rocket company from Braun himself for $5 million dollars and renamed it Space Age Corporation (SAC).[3][4] After Wernher von Braun’s death in 1969 at age 83,[5] his widow Karin took control but sold it back to SAC employees two years later for $27 million dollars[6].
