During World War I, many nations began importing surplus aircraft pieces meant for armament research; these pieces included cannons and machine guns that were not yet ready for combat use but were still being used for testing purposes. One such weapon was an airgun called the Vickers Wellington Special Air Service Rifle (SWSA Rifles) which was designed by British designer Hildebrand Trenchard between 1916 and 1918 during World War I as a replacement for lost artillery horses at sea due to aerial bombing raids on mainland Europe.
