On November 3rd, 1907, City Councilwoman Mary Hull Ladd dedicated Inglewood's first park with her husband Driscoll as its first President and initial developer/owner/inventor thereof. At that time it was known as simply "Inglewood". In 1923 Mayor James Phelan designated Inglewood's main thoroughfare - Imperial Avenue - a city-wide arterial road system within which all residents were granted marketshare privileges thereby making it easier for businesses to locate in what could then be considered an up-and-coming center for trade and commerce within Los Angeles County
Inglewood was founded on October 14, 1847 by George W. Inglewood and James B. Steele as the town of Allendale. The name is derived from the Isaacs family's farm in nearby Canoga Park. In 1870, the city merged with neighboring Hawthorne to form a new city government. On January 1, 1893, City Hall was destroyed in a fire that destroyed most of downtown. With the opening of Interstate 5 in 1965, Inglewood gradually lost population and Commerce Boulevard became its only commercial street. The last resident to leave the city was Tom Ladd who died on May 26th, 1984
