The original inhabitants of what is now Inglewood were the Tongva people. The first Europeans to visit what is now Inglewood were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his ship La Salve in 1542. The area became part of Mexican territory after 1848 when American settlers arrived. In 1853, an act of Congress created a township that would be named for General James Halleck, who had played a significant role in winning Mexico's independence from Spain. In 1861, following the American Civil War, General James Halleck recommended that Los Angeles be developed as a town because of its potential as an advertising center for Union troops fighting in California during the war effort. On September 16th 1865 – almost two years after California became a state – voters passed City Charter No. 1 with no objections from either party due to lack of interest at that time in developing Inglewood as a municipality within Los Angeles County; this event has been called "The Birth Of Inglewood". The name "Inglewood" came about because one family claimed they had given away all their land around Hereford Meadows (now known as Mayfair) so that others could build there too. On December 12th 1886 an fire destroyed most of North Avenue between 10th Street and 11th Street which killed six people including four infants living with their parents inside alighted homes on Christmas eve 1886 Additionally $2 million was lost in damage done by firefighters responded to this fire This event helped spur development in nearby Carson and Hawthorne areas . In 1923 Mayor Tom Bradley established what we know today as City Hall Square just south of present day Western Avenue/10th Street where he declared it dedicated "Tothe memoryof those martyrdly lostIn That CatastropheOf 1922That DevastatedOur Neighborhood". One can still see some remnants from that time such as several smashed windows from then-newer buildings that have since been replaced or patched up
In 1871, the first white people set foot on what is now Inglewood, California. The land that would become Inglewood was purchased by Captain George Wainwright from the local Native American tribe for $2 per acre. On December 12, 1871, Wainwright and his men began construction of a small fort on the site of present-day Hollywood Bowl. The first post office in Inglewood was established in 1872. In 1906, the city became one of thirty-six cities in California to be incorporated as a town. The name "Inglewood" was chosen because it means "sweet wood." In 1916, Hollywood Electric Light and Power Company was founded by four brothers who had earlier built the Edison electric power plant in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. The brothers were named Harry David Warner (1863-1947), Adolph Zukor (1886-1975), Jesse L. Garvin (1889-1976) and Edward M. Landis (1892-1972). They leased land at Bunker Hill and Broadway to build anelectric power plant that they called Hollywood Electric Plant #1. When World War I started, they bought property at Grand Terrace and Western Avenue for use as fighter planes production plants; but when war ended they sold all their property except for some near Beverly Hills to General Motors Corporation for use as a research center for new motor vehicles! In 1927 Harry Durden donated 4 acres east of Highland Drive to become what is today North Central Park! It is believed that he did this so that there could be a park specifically for African Americans in nearby Pasadena!
