Inglewood was founded in 1887 by two brothers, George and Rev. John Ingleside. The city's first store was a grocery store on the corner of Elm and Adams Streets. In 1895, the Inglesides built a schoolhouse on Union Street. In 1902, they erected a block of apartments at 9th and Olive Streets. In 1912, they added a building to their holdings at 15th and Olive Streets which became home to the city's first department store, The Bazaar. In 1916, the Inglesides partnered with real estate developer Harry Elmer Barnes to create City National Bank. City National grew quickly into one of California's leading banks with branches throughout the state. In 1951, George and John Ingleside died; their daughter Shirley took over operations of City National Bank until her death in 1978. In 1990, Harry Elmer Barnes donated his entire stock in City National Bank to Los Angeles County for use as part of the county-owned bank system. The Bazaar (now Macy’s) opened its doors in 1932 on Union Street near what is now USC Boulevard; it became one of LA’s most popular shopping destinations before closing its doors in 1985 due to competition from large retailers such as Sears and JCPenney.. It reopened under new ownership in 2006 but closed again after several years due to lack of business
