In 1847 Mexican land grantee José Figueroa bought part of Rancho La Brea from Antonio Lebías for $2 million dollars which became known as "Inglewood". In 1870s prominent citizens of L.A., led by George Eastman (founder of Kodak), founded the Eastman Kodak Company on a piece of property that would later become part of Inglewood. The company built its first factory on Pico Boulevard east of downtown in 1876 and soon outgrew its original location; it moved to its current site near Western Avenue and Lankershim Boulevard in 1895. The company employed over 100 people at its peak and made products such as film cameras, photography prints, Lewisographs (photograms),and Trust Photo Albums available for sale through mail order beginning in 1898.. During World War II many residents helped contribute their expertise to war efforts including munitions factories located around town including RKO Radio Pictures on Lankershim Boulevard which manufactured bombs for the U.SAAF; Kress Paper Products (now KimberlyClark) manufacturing paper cups and napkins for military use; Chase National Bank building located at 7200 Lankershim Boulevard which provided loans to war-time businesses; United Artists studio complex on Fairfax Drive near Hollywood Blvd.; several petrochemical plants operated by Sinclair Oil & Gas subsidiary: Compton Refinery on Lankershim Blvd.; Westinghouse Electric Corporation's radio station KHQ-AM with studios at 5100 Lankershis Boulevard; Lockheed Aircraft plant producing Lockheed Constellation strategic bombers - all while their homes remained undamaged during bombings raids like those seen throughout LA during that time period

In 1892, it became an unincorporated community and was later annexed by the city of Los Angeles. The first post office opened in Inglewood on October 15, 1892. The name "Inglewood" was chosen because its location on Jacaranda Road between Sherman Way and Florence Avenue made it easy to find and deliver mail from nearby businesses. In 1909, the city of Inglewood incorporated as a municipal borough with jurisdiction over all of what is now Los Angeles County save for downtown Los Angeles. On January 1, 1920, the boundaries were expanded again to include parts of Ventura County (the portion now within Van Nuys) when that county became part of LA City after being defeated in a referendum vote by residents who wanted to keep their own government separate from LA City. The population peaked at 100,814 in 1950 but has since decreased due to Immigration Reform Act started by President Harry S Truman in 1952 which limited Mexican immigration into the United States
In 1853, the United States acquired Rancho La Brea from Fernando de Alvarado. The land was home to thousands of Native Americans and began to be developed as a citrus grove and cattle ranch. In 1886, 5555 Inglewood Boulevard was built as one of Los Angeles' first commercial streets.
