By 1851, alledgedly because of this association with James Inglesmith and other early settlers at what is now called Montrose Avenue near Hollywood Boulevard, residents renamed their new town "Inglewood". On December 6th 1860 a group of men from Pasadena founded what became known as Pasadena Union Station on what would later become Olympic Boulevard. In 1863 voters passed an ordinance naming their new town after President Abraham Lincoln (George Washington's Vice President). In 1870 residents voted to annex neighboring communities Vernon and Hawthorne; this annexation did not take place however because Hawthorne objected to being annexed without giving consideration to its concerns about competing for jobs with neighboring Pasadena. In 1907 Mayor George Norris ordered police officers present during a pitched battle between rival gangs on 20th Street not shoot when ordered due to public order concerns; this event led eventually to Norris becoming mayor in 1911. During World War II large numbers of Japanese Americans were interned here during WWII under orders from Franklin D Roosevelt as part of his plan for racial resettlement known asOperation Paperclip. After the war many people left or were forced out due economic hardship brought on by post-war recession; most notably Harry Bridges who developed one of LA's largest housing tracts called Koreatown off Exposition Boulevard across from Staples Center
