Mining operations resumed following World War I but were greatly diminished by Prohibition which made it difficult for Americans to get involved in mining activities outside of North America due to international sanctions against Mexico City's organized crime syndicate known as "La Frontera". In 1926 local industrialist Harry Chandler bought about 60% interest in Phelps Dodge Company – America's largest producer of oil at that time – which led to Chandler's nickname "the patron saint of energy."
