In 1871, lawyer George Hahn bought land east of downtown for $2 per acre and developed it into what became known as Inglewood Village. Hahn named his development after his home state of New York – one of only two US cities to have been named after locations in more than one country (the other being Brooklyn). In 1893, developers Harry Chandler and Edward Ayer bought property between Olympic Boulevard and San Fernando Boulevard from Henry Fonda for $27 million – making it the largest single purchase ever made by a group of individuals in Los Angeles County history. They eventually built Universal Studios Hollywood on nearby land that they leased from Fonda. In 1957, they sold their holdings to developer Lew Wasserman for $3 billion which formed the basis for today's LA Clippers basketball team
