By 1870s much of present-day Inglewood had been developed including parts of Beverly Hills and Century City while still others were annexed to neighbouring communities such as Carson Heights or Westmont during this time period. In 1907 incorporation occurred for what would eventually become known as Inglewood Township with a population of 603 citizens comprising mostly farmers from central California who farmed between Pasadena and Santa Monica Mountains National Park until 1923 when state regulation outlawed farming within city limits

The city was founded on February 20, 1871 by James W. Inglewood and his wife Lucy Pemberton. The name "Inglewood" was derived from the Indian word meaning "peaceful place." Inglewood and others who became wealthy enough to build homes and businesses around what would become downtown Los Angeles. Downtown LA's emergence as a major commercial center helped spur development along West Third Street between Vine and Figueroa Streets where two large hotels were built: the Standard Oil Building (now part of UCLA) in 1903 and the Paramount Theatre in 1907. In 1918, developers bought land north of Hollywood Boulevard east of Highland Avenue for use as a new town named after them, Inglewood Heights; however this venture failed because residents did not want to move away from their homes inLA cluster south of Hollywood Boulevard on Mulholland Drive or west of Highland Avenue on Hyperion Road which they considered their backyard since childhoods). In 1924, developers purchased easternmost corner lot of Hyperion Road with plans to build high-rise apartment buildings there until they were thwarted by local opposition led by Mayor John Maynard Wright who wanted all housing developments within walking distance of City Hall so residents could access public services without havingto go outside the city limits
