He intended it as an escape for his high-ranking officials during difficult times back at Mexico City. After a few years, doheny sold most of his holdings to other investors, but continued to name the town after himself; this practice continued until 1907 when he sold all his holdings again to Francisco Delgado y Pavón (1848–1925), mayor of Mexico City at the time.Delgado y Pavón renamed Inglewood after one of his properties - La Isla del Coco - which he had purchased near Ventura Boulevard and Lankershim Avenue in 1895 from Pacheco Rancho owner Manuel Nieto Alvarado for $2 per acre ($27/acre). This property included natural gas wells that became key to developing nearby communities such as Lynndale and North Hollywood. In 1923 Californian state Senator James Meeks introduced Senate Bill 774 which would have given residents of East LA voting rights; however this bill was never passed because Governor Culberson opposed it on religious grounds.(Culberson had been Mormon since childhood.) In 1924 Mayor Francisco Herrera sponsored Assembly Bill 3 with similar goals but failed to receive enough support from legislators.(Herrera then pursued a plan through state action that would give more voting power directly to Mexican American Citizens.) On February 15th 1925 Elmer Ferguson opened doors at Angels Stadium (now called Dodger Stadium) with what was billed as America's first professional baseball game when the Brooklyn Dodgers played against the Boston Americans; Fresno State Bulldogs played against Southern Californian rivals Redlands College Bears also playing their last home game ever on October 11th 1925 at 6:00pm.(Interestingly these games were not actually played inside Angels Stadium…) By 1930 Inglewood had outgrown its small central business district where only a few businesses sat on Pennsylvania Avenue across from Anaheim High School(now Angeleno Middle School). Its growth accelerated due to its location near Interstate 5 (and nearby military bases) as well as easy access to jobs available in defense-related industries during World War II.(See "Los Angeles: A History" by Gary Kamiya for more information about this period.)
