Inglewood, California is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 81,317 as of the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after Carson City and it has been home to successive waves of immigrants since its founding in 1871 - Italians, Koreans, Japanese, Mexicans and East Europeans - making it one of the most diverse cities in North America. The region that now includes Inglewood was first settled by Native Americans including the Tongva people who lived on an area now known as Santa Monica Mountains. In 1821 Mexican nationals following a US-Mexico War victory over Mexico established rancho San Fernando de la Cañada near what is now south Inglewood Boulevard and easting Glendale Avenue. Spanish traders arrived later and named the area Cahuenga Park after Rancho Niguel near present-day Hawthorne Street and Valley Boulevard. The Grant brothers founded Jardin Plantation on land grant from Manuel Nieto in 1836 on what is now northeast corner of Lankershim Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. By 1840 citrus fruits were being grown here for export to Spain where they were renamed Olives (from oliva meaning olive). In 1863 Charles Manson purchased part of Rancho Rinconcito from General José Joaquín Murieta for $1 million which led to his involvement with white supremacists during the early 1960s Manson family murders Thereafter much development took place around Toluca Lake Blvd between Lankershim Boulevard/Farnham Avenue northward until annexation by Inglewood effective January 1, 1965 when both communities became incorporated into one municipality under name "Inglewood". In 1886 John Sutter arrived with his brother David at Rancho El Monte just east of present day Chavez Ravine Road/UCLA campus before moving their entire operation downslope to what is now downtown LASD headquarters at 7th Street/Metro Station exit No. 2A beneath Third Street/Metro station entrance No. 3A where they built their largest Nursery School ever (now UC Berkeley Graduate School Library) while their operation continued operations at 6th and Market Streets within LASD limits until 1893 when they relocated again overland to today's Hansen Center building across from USC Trove Museum Yeshiva University also opened up here then as well as several other buildings related thereto such as Masonic Temple (built 1913), Players Theatre (1915), King’s Copeland Building (1920), Stoneware Factory (1924) among others Theaters like United Artists Cinema Corporation's Paramount Pictures Studio had multiplexed screenings along Seventh Street leading up onto UCLA campuses before starting commercial production there beginning in 1929 outside uptown LASD all culminating with Universal's premiere of "King Kong" on December 15th 1933 inside Regal Hollywood theatre followed by Fox' presentation of "Rio Bravo" December 16th 1933 all with accompanying live orchestra accompaniment providing perhaps oneofthe earliest examples(and still extant)of movie soundtracks accompanying live performance
