The original population of the city was only about 10 people. In 1915, the City of Los Angeles annexed much of what is now Ingliswood and began to call it "Ingliswood." Inglewood has had many different names over its history. It was called Hollywood during the silent era, Palmdale during the Golden Age of American motion pictures, and then again after World War II as Englewood-Burbank. From 1965 until 1997 it was known as West IngleWOOD. Upon its incorporation into Los Angeles County in 1998, it became known as Inglewood. The city is located on a small peninsula that juts out into Long Beach Bay; this peninsula provides ample room for shipping and harbor activity but also makes for good land for development with plenty of open space within walking distance of most residents. The area around present-day Ingliswoods edge were first inhabited by Monoqs who may have been used as part of trading posts between Mono Lake (north) and Mission Bay (south). A group led by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo explored these lands in 1542 while exploring what is today San Diego County looking for new land to settle after experiencing great success at planting missions in Alta California (the region now known as Nevada). At some point prior to 1602 this area came under Mexican control and hence various Spanish name such as Rancho de las Conchas or Rancho de los Conchas before being given to Anglo settlers including John Pee Dee who founded Ingliswest Colony on November 17th 1872 just east ofpresent day downtown LOS ANGELES when he leased land from José Joaquin Cámpora which included present day Ingliswoods cape which he named WILMINGTON ISLAND after his father-in-lawSir Wilfred Owen who fought at Waterloo
