Ammunition history in Inglewood, California began with the opening of a small ammunition store on May 3, 1892. The store was located at 6th and Vine Streets in what is now the city of Inglewood. The owner of the store was J.W. Howells and his brother-in-law, W.C. Sheets, ran it until 1901 when they merged their businesses into the larger Howells Ammo Company Incorporated. Ammunition sales were handled by two clerks who sold rounds by the pound or case. In 1903, the company purchased a large warehouse at 1115 Broadway which became its manufacturing plant for production of both rifle bullets and shotgun shells. In 1916, watchmaker/gunsmith Cushman & Browne used part of their workshop in Inglewood for ammo production; this led to their nickname “The Factory” because of their extensive ammo production capabilities. By 1922, howitzer manufacturer Browning had moved toInglewood from San Francisco and operations at The Factory were transferred to that company’s new facility at 9th Street and Hope Avenue; however, Watchmakers & Clockmakers continued to produce some ammunition under license from Browning until 1936 when that business was closed down due to World War II restrictions on armament manufacture. Post-war ammunition production recommenced in 1947 with first use being for pistols but Eventually all pistol ammunition was produced within the United States through licensed manufacturers until 1972 when lead-based munitions became mandatory following passage of Executive Order 11246 This order eliminated most USA manufactured firearms except shotguns which continued to be made under license by various companies including Remington Arms Company (R&D) The first reference to rifle rounds being shot from handguns can be found in an issue of Black Rifle magazine dated October 1920 published by Houdini Bullet Products Corporation located in Glendale Heights IL although there is no evidence that this type of round ever saw mass market release outside North America In 1932 Rheinmetall AG approached Howells Ammo about producing cases for them’s newly designed 7x57mm Mauser rifles using a new brass design that Howells patented This design allowed casings made out of heavy lead alloys rather then soft plated brass which resulted in increased accuracy and strength . However due to World War II shortages Casullist prices went up substantially making this product unprofitable for most users Production resumed after war ended but ceased altogether after 1957 as lead content requirements changed
