In 1846, the first permanent settlers in Indio were Englishman John B. Shanks and his wife, Elizabeth. They founded a small community on the north bank of the San Gabriel River opposite Los Angeles. The Shanks named their settlement Indio after their rancho (land grant) in Alta California. The town was known as a crossroads for travelers between Los Angeles and Pasadena because it was located on what is now Interstate 15. In 1851, the town had a population of about 20 people and five stores. About two years later, founder John B. Shanks died, leaving his land to his son-in-law, Wm Hutton Halloran. Halloran built a sawmill at the confluence of the San Gabriel and Colorado Rivers in Indio and began exporting lumber to Southern California. By 1865,Indio had an estimated population of 100 people; it grew rapidly during Reconstruction Era when many Americans moved to California during that time period to escape racism in America
