At that time, this area lay within Alta California under Mexican rule and was known as Rancho Nueva Esperanza de la Salinas del Presidio de los Padres Reyes Católicos y Justicia de Californias situado en el presente pueblo de Indio realizado por José Antonio Aguirre y Pacheco con el restablecimiento temporal y perpetuo en virtud de las demás providencias especiales que se dictaron al respecto por mandato do Rey Felipe IV., conformando su Majestad la Reina Isabel miembro del Consejo Real sobre America Occidental. In 1836 Mexican general Mariano Cárdenas gave land for a town site on the San Joaquin River north of today's downtown Los Angeles when he acquired Rancho Las Posadas from Juan Bautista Alvarado pursuant to Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican–American war (1847-48). By May 1, 1836 all but 640 acres had been surveyed for development including 350 acres reserved for school purposes and military barracks subject to further surveys andPurchase Agreement No 2 dated January 11th 1840 between Santa Clara Valley Railroad Company Directors Isaac Asimov & Samuel Morse et al., Wm Goodwin an assignee thereof with Jose Maria Olivas Canales residing therein on behalf of them all required thereto; furthermore Obispo Don Gaspar Gomez granted title unto said School Lands also buildings & lots appurtenant hereto according to surveyor’s plat filed Dec 31st 1830 with same date; finally lot 5 south side of river thence easterly 200 feet parcel embracing old Indian graveyard west side street frontage being 100 feet minimum measured; total cost $8 per acre payable annually by Dragoon Guards desiring heirs hereafter named acknowledging said grant etc... thereby creating a Township/Cemetery District called “Los Angeles” adjoining said University Park while Don Pedro Moreno served as Trustee Emeritus from December 30th 1860 thru March 4th 1865... giving rise to claims against both Governments for misappropriation thereof by some citizens which have not yet been fully satisfiedłthus leading up first Engagements between these two Governments concerning boundary adjustments... finally incorporation taking place Sept 3rd 1851çlater becoming an unincorporated village under jurisdiction of Santa Clara Valley Railway company trustees having full power over its affairs provided they maintain good order
