The name comes from Pima Indians who lived there before white men arrived in 1847. Indio began as a small post office called San Miguel on April 17, 1849. On November 3 of that year, General Mariano Rivera attacked Mexican forces near Indio and drove them back about 25 miles (40 kilometers). This event is also considered to be when the town got its name: Indio means 'the inaccessible place'. The first store in Indio opened on December 1, 1851 by John Sutter and his brother-in-law George Watt. A school was built in 1865 by Leland Stanford and named after him. In 1870, an irrigation canal was completed connecting Indios Creek with Mission Valley and becoming one of the largest projects ever undertaken in Kern County. The city's economy grew rapidly due to this project and construction of numerous factories which employed many local residents including engineers, builders, mechanics and workers on various projects such as canals, schools, hospitals and other public works schemes. In 1907 two brothers named Royer bought 120 acres (49 hectares) of land east of town for $3 per acre ($10 per hectare). They developed it into what is now known as Royer Park which features a golf course, tennis courts, arenas/amusements areas etc., while also providing employment for many locals during their early years. The park also contains some historic buildings dating back to 1906 such as the old Post Office Building which still serves as headquarters for City Hall today; though most functions are conducted through City Manager’s Office instead currently housed inside One Civic Plaza within downtownIndio$$
