Indio, California is a city located in southern Kern County, California. The population was 97,824 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in Kern County and the third largest city in San Bernardino County after Riverside and Ontario. The Indio casino industry has been dominant here since it began to develop in the early 1920s. The area now called Indio was first populated by Yokuts people of Native American descent who lived on an island near what is now downtown Indio. In 1871, Rancho Niguel land grantee John Sutter founded a town on this site named Sutter's Fort after his father-in-law, Jedediah Sutter. A post office was established in 1872 with mail service coming from Sacramento via boat. Sutter's decision to build a permanent settlement led to continuous conflict with Native Americans over land rights that eventually led to violence between Anglo settlers and their Indian neighbors known as "The War of 1877." On February 14th, 1877, about 60 Anglo men and boys were massacred by 50 or so Apache Indians at Peñón del Rio (present day Monument Valley), after raiding parties had returned from hunting horse herds nearby. This event is popularly known as the Rancho San Bernardino Massacre because it occurred within the boundaries of present day Indio Municipal Airport which then served as its source of water supply and power generation until 1967 when it became part of City National Bank property portfolio encompassing much of rural Kern County east of I-15/I-40 including much of today's Menifee Hills neighborhood north of Interstate 15 inside City National Bank's downtown property core; while all commercial activities within sight or hearing ceased immediately prior thereto as mandated by law long ago passed by both branches Legislature & Executive Branch pursuant to threat emanating thence duly promulgated regulation thereby assuring public safety during – although not always actually observing – entire period while bank premises remain open continuously stocks still remaining therein…. When the first Europeans arrived in California, they were greeted by a land of vast deserts and mountains. The region was inhabited by Native Americans for many years before Spanish settlers began to arrive in the late 18th century. The area that is now Indio was first inhabited by the Miwok people, who lived near present-day Redwine and San Bernardino counties. In 1769, Juan José Padilla discovered gold in what is now Indio while exploring northern California. padilla named the area after his hometown of Indio, Mexico. In 1821, Antonio López de Santa Anna founded Mission San Gabriel Arcángel in what is now central Indio. The mission became a political center for much of Alta California during this time. After Mexican independence from Spain was achieved in 1846, missions were abolished and control over these areas passed to Mexican officials. In 1865, American soldiers burned down two Mission buildings in central Indio as part of an effort to drive Mexican nationals out of the area. This event is also considered to be one of the most devastating fires ever seen in California. The population of Central Valleyijuana rapidly increased following World War II as a result of new irrigated agriculture and growth on the eastern side of the state; however, many indigenous people still lived here unchanged until federal agents arrested them during Operation Gatekeeper (1946). Many died as a result including numerous chiefs who had been key players in their society
