This group included such luminaries as Diego Rivera and Manuel García Márquez; it was also among the first groups European Americans attempted to integrate into their society as equals. The community grew rapidly but failed due to cultural differences between Latinos and Anglo Americans - including rampant gambling and drunkenness - as well as lack of social infrastructure such as healthcare or education opportunities for indigenous peoples living among them. In 1854 Padilla traveled eastward along the Oregon Trail seeking permission from Brigham Young to establish Mormon settlements within contemporary Arizona Territory; he instead received news that Joseph Smith had been assassinated in Carthage Jail in Nauvoo, Illinois less than two weeks earlier!
