Gun Barrels are one of the oldest objects in Indio, California. The first mention of guns and barrel usage can be traced back to 1838 when Captain John Sutter founded the town of Indio on Rancho San Rafael. His rifle company was among the first in California. Captain Sutter also founded a local armory where he stored firearms and ammunition for his troops. In 1851, Captain Sutter's son-in-law, George Armstrong, purchased the land that now makes upIndio Boulevard from Santiago de Compostela y Crespo. George Armstrong donated 7 acres to Indio to become an infill lot forresidential development and named it "Armstrong Place." In 1872, another local resident, A.G. Hahnemann, donated 8 acres adjacent to Armstrong Place to the city of Indio for use as a park with a large green lawn and tennis courts. Today, Armstrong Place is home to Indioscale Aquarium which is open every day except Mondays from 10am-4pm and features more than 20 different species of fish including an oceanic spiny lobster! Curtis & Sons Emporium Gun Store opened in 1893 at 9th Street and Broadway in downtown Indio as one of the earliest gun stores in California. It was located just east of what is now Interstate 5 and across from what is now City Hall Plaza

Indio, California is a city located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 172,826 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after Los Angeles. The area now known as Indio was part of Rancho de los Palos Verdes Mexican land grant given to Jesús Sepúlveda by Governor Manuel Nieto on January 16, 1847. Sepúlveda named it Cerrito del Valle for his home of Cerrito on a hilltop about 8 miles (10 km) east of downtown San Bernardino. The town began as an agricultural community with hay and straw production being its mainstay until the mid-19th century when railways arrived and started transporting goods to and from cities throughout California. By 1870, Indio had become a major railroad center with several Amtrak stations along Elmira Street between Broadway and Sather Streets. In 1901, the first banks were opened in Indio with First United States Bank becoming one of the few national banks established in Southern California during that time period. A major fire destroyed much of downtown San Bernardino on December 24, 1904; only three blocks remained standing when it was finally extinguished less than two weeks later. The resulting damage forced construction of new buildings including what is now City Hall which was completed in 1905 and still looks unique today. In 1935, Municipal Court Judge Royce Loomis became one of the first Judges appointed by Governor Earl Warren to serve all county courts statewide under then state law which eliminated local judicial authority throughout most of California except for certain specific areas such as family law, criminal prosecutions and public health matters where county judges continued to be appointed pursuant to existing law until 1959 when state constitutional amendment abolished these functions outright within each individual county). As part of this changeover process more than 1/2 million residents - nearly half of whom lived inside city limits - lost their right to vote due to lack thereof within either political subdivision or within their respective counties subject only to review by elected officials statewide who were empowered by statute ( subsequent revisions granted voting rights upon request pursuant thereto). This influx has led to changes in demographics over time including growing numbers of Hispanics (estimated at 43% or more since 1990), Asians (4%) and others generally associated with high-skill jobs outside traditional manufacturing sectors during past decades have begun flowing into Indio creating pockets not typically found elsewhere in metropolitan Los Angeles County although some recent arrivals are finding work opportunities here that match their skills rather than those traditionally available outside urban areas especially if they can afford suburban living costs which continueto be much higher relative to rates charged hereinabouts notwithstanding efforts made herebyto bring prices down thereby enhancing economic opportunities also through job training programs presently being offered thereinfor both men and women although admittedly additional effort might be required thereafter particularly ifModeo Inc.'s proposed $1 billion redevelopment project heretofore known as "Oasis" should eventually proceed notwithstanding opposition thereto largely based immediately adjacent thereto consisting chiefly*largely*of singlefamily dwelling units without accompanying employment or other features appertaining thereto [emphasis added]

The first human to live in Indio, California was Miguel de Cervantes, who arrived in 1769. In 1821, the first post office was established in the town. The town experienced a population growth during the 19th century due to its proximity to Los Angeles and its natural resources. The early 20th century saw an increase in production of fruits and vegetables due to irrigation systems and increased use of effective pesticides. During World War II, Indio played a significant role as a munitions plant; many people from Indio worked at this facility.
