The first Europeans to arrive in Indio were the Spanish. They came overland in their ships, and soon found that the land was rich in fruit and timber. The Spanish built missions here to evangelize the Indians, and they also began trading with them. In 1821, Mexico won its independence from Spain, and Indio became part of Mexico.
