Indio, California is a small town in San Diego County, California. The population was 9,653 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of the Greater San Diego Area and is adjacent to downtown San Diego. The first Europeans to visit Indio were Mexican fur traders who journeyed up the Colorado River in 1821. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna established his army at Indio and marched it north into central California to confront Ulysses S. Grant's forces near Rancho San Marcos. In 1865, General Steve Kearny founded what would become Kearny Station on Hwy 101 south of town after he encircled Mexican City with his 1864 Campaign against Mexico and its rulers at Chihuahua City (now Ciudad Juárez). Kearny also built purpose-built barracks for soldiers at Indio Creek which became known as "TheHill". In 1870, Bethlehem Steel opened a steelworks in nearby Escondido while other heavy industry began to develop throughout Southern California such as Ralston & Son Paper Mills (now Kimberly Clark), Alcoa Aluminum Works (now aluminum producer Alcoa), Lockheed Aircraft Manufacturing Company (later Lockheed Martin) and soon numerous light industrial plants including Wickersham & Reed Paper Mill; Pacific Gas and Electric Company's initial line of power transmission from Ridgecrest Reservoir through desert Kern County then downriver to Imperial Valley; United States Naval Base Point Loma; Corona Motel; Kaiser Permanente Hospital; El Dorado Hotel - now called The Desert Inn - all within minutes of one another by means of new dirt roads connecting them. Ida Lockwood started a grocery store in 1922 that became one of the largest in town with hundreds of stores across three counties before it failed in 1957 due to overpopulation and competition from Safeway supermarkets opening in neighboring towns such as Carlsbad and Encinitas during this time period when Indio was still an agricultural community principally raised cotton raising livestock such as pigs, sheep and llamas until more recently converted mostly into housing developments for people working inside these large factories or living close by commuting into these cities for work outside the home where smoking cigarettes was common outdoors until recently outlawed indoors although exceptions continue exist including casinos which are allowed indoor smoking whereas outdoor gambling is not currently allowed
