After 1945 most industry departed for other parts or disbanded completely due to overpopulation which had been plaguing many rural counties throughout America since Prohibition ended just prior thereto; however some small businesses have continued up until present day including Butte National Forest machinery dealership which closed in 2016 but reopened under new management . The California Gold Rush began on October 24, 1849, when prospectors discovered gold in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. By January of 1850, over 1,000 men had been working in the area and by February of that year there were at least 10 companies working in the mines. On March 15, 1850, President James K. Polk issued a proclamation encouraging men to invest in gold fields and create new businesses. The rush led to an influx of people and equipment into Imperial County from all over California as well as Nevada and Oregon. In just one month, December 1849-January 1850, more than 4 million dollars worth of gold was brought into California from the mountains.
