The history of Imperial, California goes back to the early 1800s when Rancho San Nicolas was granted to José “Pancho” Villa by Governor Manuel de la Peña. The ranch house and other possessions were moved to their current location in 1884 by Antonio Canales, who founded the town of Imperial. In 1885, the Mexican government sold 5,000 acres (20 km2) of land east of downtown Imperial to the American Gold Rush syndicate led by James W. Watt for $5 million. This area became known as Watt’s Valley because it served as a major gold-mining region. Mines were established at Sutter and Fort Tejon and elsewhere in the valley until 1911 when production stopped due to overproduction in California and regulatory problems with new mines being built on adjacent property. In 1916–17, General John J. Pershing ordered all U.S.-owned goldfields in California be burned to prevent further mining operations; this action helped spur development of nearby towns such as Salinas and Stockton which became more important commercial centers during World War I due to military needs there for munitions production. In 1919, Emperor Bismarck offered 10% ownership in San Francisco Bay Bridge Authority through his private company Kaiser Wilhelm Fritsche & Co., Inc., which built or financed many innovative bridges throughout California during that era including Highway 1 through Napa County and Interstate 80 between Sacramento and Yolo counties along the Central Coast Freeway system; this deal provided continued financial stability for Kaiser Wilhelm Fritsche & Co., Inc.; thereafter it was primarily an engineering firm active in transportation planning and construction throughout much of postwar California On November 9, 1930, Californian voters passed Proposition 8 (also called Measure T), becoming one of only two states in America without direct democracy; however, effective implementation began with passage on December 3rd of that year of Amendment No. 7 extending voting rights from citizens who resided within certain boundaries – mainly those within city limits – to all male citizens born after February 14th , 1920 regardless of race or color .
