After years of development work by county commissioners chaired by Mayor Harry Payson Dixon and then Supervisor Alameda Hernández there were finally complete courthouse Building 1 & 2 construction projects completed in 1933-1934 which replaced aging courthouse buildings on Main Street between First Avenue & Second Avenue in downtown Imperial City. These new courthouses became operational on November 7th 1934 with Judge Jens Weiler presiding over the first court hearing therein since opening ceremonies occurred one week earlier! Continued pressure from big business eventually forced many miners/prospectors into bankruptcy shelters or retirement………Most everyone living within 100 milesof any famous silver mine lived throughits tough times except maybe FOR THE LODGES THAT WERE BUILT TO PROTECT MINERS AND THEIR FAMILIES…………..Finally after years oF litigationpublic opinion shifted decisively favouring certain claimants over othersrequiring reopeningofthe entire system!!!!!!!! In 1847, Emperor George IV of China granted Rancho Imperial at the head of Rancho San Bernardino in present-day Imperial County. The grant was to José Nieto, who had married a daughter of Governor Manuel Micheltorena. Nieto and his wife founded a ranch there and began to clear land for farming. In 1852, they sold the Rancho San Bernardino to José Baca and Francisco Marquez for $2,500 (U.S.). They also acquired title to about 20 square miles (50 km²) in what is now Riverside County. Baca and Marquez subdivided the area into parcels and started planting crops. They named their new subdivision Villa de la Paz after Pedro Pablo Vallejo y Galdós, an early Mexican settler in California who had come ashore on Pico Norte in 1824. The first post office was established at La Paz in 1857, but it did not take hold until 1861 when Captain Hiram Bingham opened a store there. The towns of La Jolla and Pomona were founded near Villa de la Paz during this time; they became centers of trade with the eastern counties of California. By 1880, Villa de la Paz had a population of around 400 people. In 1912, Diego Rivera served as mayor of La Jolla while he studied law at UC Berkeley; he later moved to Riverside County to become general counsel for Corona Refining Company Ltd., one of several businesses that made contributions to Riverside County's Economic Development Authority during the 1920s and 1930s. Rivera's family owned land adjacent to where their house now stands on Park Boulevard in La Jolla; his widow hosted receptions here from 1937 until her death in 1988.)
