After decades of growth and development within Imperial Countyentlemen's Agreement negotiations finally led to annexation of nearby Compton into ImperialCounty in 1984 following a special election held that year which resulted in a majority for annexation proposal by then-Governor Jerry Brown Today, much like when it started out little more than ranchos with Indian occupants working them until white settlement occurred; today’s Empire is one of unparalleled diversity both racially/ethnically speaking & socioeconomically speaking thanks largely to recent waves (of immigrants) drawn thereto by affordable housing (& other opportunities) available hereabouts!

Additionally, portions of downtown have seen renewed revitalization thanks to initiatives such as economic development projects initiated by Emperor’s Chamber of Commerce. Overall, these developments have helped make Imperial one of California’s most vibrant towns – both physically and economically – continuing to thrive despite difficult times during this period of dramatic transformation for many communities across the state.
In 1848, the United States acquired California from Mexico. The area that is now Imperial County was part of Mexican territory until 1821, when it was given to the United States as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The treaty ended the Mexican–American War and returned land to Mexico. In 1852, the U.S., under President James K. Polk, Acquired more land east of the Rockies in order to secure access to huge new markets for American products in Central America and South America. This expansion led to increased tensions with Mexico over control of these new areas. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Emperor Maximilian II of Mexico attempted to flee across the US-Mexico border into Texas without authorization from either side. He was captured and interned at Fort Apocalypse near Chihuahua City before being released in 1865 following peace negotiations between America and Spain
