Imperial, California is a small town located in the Kern County seat of Bakersfield. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from "Imperial," an Rancho Niguel land grant given to Spanish settlers in 1848. The grant included 6,000 acres (2 km²) of land near what is now Imperial and part of present-day Bakersfield. The area that would become Imperial was first settled by Native American people in the late 1800s. By 1851, cattle ranchers had arrived in what is now Bakersfield and began to range across the Kern River Valley. In 1868, John Wesley Powell discovered gold in Northern California and soon afterward started mining for gold on Ranches Niguel and Tejon Indian Reservation east of what is now Imperial. In 1870, United States troops burned down the Chisholm Trail wagon train that traveled overland from Sacramento to Stockton because they were afraid it would be used as a trade route by Mexican traders working with prospectors looking for treasure hidden in California Gold Rush sites like Sutter's Fort and Lassen Peak. By 1875, most of southern Kern County had been claimd by Mexico as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended Ulysses S Grant's Mexican War Expedition. On December 15th, 1875, General James Hahn arrived at San Francisco with his forces following days earlier when he completed his march north from Yuma Creek against Mexico City's orders on their way to retake New Mexico Territory lost during Santa Fe Expedition two years earlier. The area now known as Imperial County was part of the Mexican State of Chihuahua until 1848, when it became part of the United States. In 1853, it was organized as a county within California. The first governor of California, John C. Fremont, appointed James K. Polk to be its first sheriff and captain of police in 1856. The county seat was City of Mexicali at a location near present-day Indio. On July 24, 1860, the county seat moved to San Diego and remained there until 1912 when it returned to Mexicali.
