In 1871, following passage of the Mexican-American War, California became a U.S. territory following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As part of this treaty, Mexico ceded all of what is now Imperial County to America and divided it among the United States as follows: North California (now Fresno) was added to Nevada; South California (Los Angeles) was divided between Arizona and New Mexico; and western San Diego and southern Riverside were organized into Orange County. As part of this process, land grants were made to individuals in these areas pursuant to Manifest Destiny theology which held that America would expand westward because God had told them so. The first grantees from north California included James Wyer, John Sutter, George Hearst and others who entered into agreements with the federal government for tracts of land that eventually formed today’s Imperial County. The area now known as Imperial began developing rapidly during the late 1800s due in large part to its location midway between two major railroad hubs – Sacramento and Anaheim – making it an ideal place for businesses and entrepreneurs looking to establish themselves in a new country. This growth also led to increased traffic on the various roads running through the county, which necessitated more development along Regional Road 516. Today, many historic districts within Empire are still visible evidence of this growth: Foothills Boulevard in downtown Los Angeles is home to remnants of several early 19th century brick buildings dating back to when railroads served as a main source of transportation connecting Southern California with northern San Francisco; Pioneer Road runs through downtown Healdsburg; Alamo Heights Boulevard includes portions of both Mission Dolores School District No. 4 - oneof oldest high school districts in the nation - located east adjacentto Mission Santa Barbara University; etc.). Today, thanks in large part to Interstate 80 bisecting Imperial from east-west through much of its center, shopping opportunities abound for residents within easy reach by car or public transportation as well as convenient locations for restaurants/cafes/bars close by should one desire such things while living or visiting Imperial County. And given that most people living within Empire work outside their homes either full-time or intermittently throughout their day – whether commuting into town or outlying communities – there’s never shortage of activities or events open unto those who take advantage thereof!

The first U.S. post office in what is now Imperial County was opened in 1847, and the first store on the current site of town was erected in 1851. In 1850, population numbers reached 3,000 people; by 1870 they had grown to over 10,000 people. On July 4th of that year, a group of soldiers from San Diego attacked an American settlement at Yuba City (now Redding), killing about 50 settlers and wounding dozens more before being driven off by rifle fire from defenders led by Captain George Sutter
The California Gold Rush of 1849 led to the early settlement of Imperial County by American citizens. The first post office was established in 1851, and the county seat was then located in what is now downtown Visalia. In 1865, San Francisco became the new county seat, and Imperial County lost its status as a separate county.
