There is little information available about the history of Imperial, California. The community was first established in 1851 as part of the Donner Party, and it became an independent county in 1861. In 1916, Imperial was merged with neighboring Kern County to form a new statewide government called the State of California. The city of Imperial remained an independent municipality until 1959. The city was founded on December 12, 1851 by Capt. John C. Fremont and his party as they traveled from Sacramento to meet with Governor Manuel Micheltorena about their new settlement on theoma (now Yuba City). The party consisted of 15 men and 2 women--Captain Fremont's wife Jane and three daughters. At first, there were no buildings or residents within the small town--the only occupants being some animals that had been driven there by Captain Fremont himself. Fremont named the town after Emperor Napoleon III of France because he felt that it would be a more welcoming place for immigrants than any other location in California at that time. Initial growth within the small community occurred due to its strategic location between Yuba City and Reno and its close proximity to both Cache Valley and national forests; however, by 1855, businesses had started opening up in nearby San Francisco so those living within Imperial began looking for ways to escape the Gold Rush fever sweeping across Northern California at that time. In 1865, local officials organized a meeting at which they decided upon plans for a new courthouse and jail; however, these Plans were never realized because of increased competition from San Francisco for business space within Empire limits. By 1870, most businesses had closed down due to decreased trade opportunities available outside of Empire due to increased transportation costs associated with gold discoveries throughout Northern California as well as low prices for goods emanating from China during this period according to historian Harry Sanger . However, despite these challenges, people continued working hard during this difficult time; many even set up their own businesses supplementing those already existing in town while others donated land or money towards building projects such as a school or road system which still exists today! When statehood was granted to California on February 14th 1912 under President Abraham Lincoln's Executive Order 9263—known commonly as "Lincoln Oak"—Empire became one of its original counties along side Kern County (renamed Los Angeles County) under then-Governor Hiram Johnson who created it out of parts off Kern County including Needles Canyon/Napa Valley eastward into what is now Riverside County when all but Yosemite National Park were added thereto following World War II . It wasn't until 1958 when Imperial finally lost contact with Los Angeles County altogether following several years without communication; although residents continue residing within both counties today albeit through various forms of government service unavailable through LA county services like healthcare etc.. As mentioned earlier both cities have maintained separate governments since 1959 despite sharing borders - something few other communities can boast having accomplished over that long span!

The Imperial County of California was named for the Spanish Empire, which controlled much of the area at the time. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Imperial County were ranch hands and Missionaries who arrived in 1846. The county was organized on March 14, 1853, when it was created from parts of San Diego and Riverside Counties.
