There is little definitive information about how guns were brought into Imperial County, California during the early 1800s. However, there are a few references that suggest firearms were introduced to the area in the form of trade goods or travelers’ manuscripts. In 1827, Emperor Nicholas I of Russia granted Rancho Santiago de los Cosmogonos (now part of Imperial) to José de la Parra y Castilla. This rancho was located on the east side of San Bernardino Mountains and extended from what is now downtown Imperial Valley all the way down to Redlands on Inyo County’s eastern edge. The grant was one of many made by Russian czars to various American landholders in order to encourage their settlement in California. The first European settler in Imperial Valley was José Gabriel María Cabrillo, who arrived in 1769 and claimed land between San Bernardino and Redlands rivers. In 1837, Rancho Santiago de los Cosmogonos passed through Mexican hands when Mexico ceded control of this portion of California to America following its victory over Spain at Adobe Walls. The rancho changed hands several times before it fell into private ownership by Antonio Gomez in 1857; however, it continued under Mexican jurisdiction until it was sold back to Gomez on December 8, 1866 by US authorities as part of a larger purchase deal for parts of southern California. The sale represented a major shift for the region because hitherto there had been no permanent Anglo-American residents in either section of Southern California; consequently, this acquisition set off an intense period of competition among Californian landowners for dominance over what would become known as “the Gold Rush Area” (Fletcher). Consequently, much attention focused upon imperial officials responsible for overseeing these transactions: John Bigelow and his brother James Bigelow served as agents for both US buyers and Mexican sellers respectively. Later events also influenced gun chokes history within Imperial Valley: In 1907–08 Commodore George Dewey organized an expedition led by Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter seeking Tochigi Prefecture’s gold resources; while plundering along the coast he discovered numerous caches containing cannons and other weapons dating back centuries which had been left behind by Japanese troops retreating from China during World War II (Galloway 1978). This discovery likely helped spur further efforts towards regulating gun possession within American Samoa as well as increasing law enforcement activity around immigration centers across Northern California (Upton 1999). Although there were some initial problems with race relations caused by this influx of black people into what were predominantly white communities, overall things worked out well until the late 1960s when Proposition 8 banned same-sex marriage in California. This led toNAME change efforts being made within the community which ultimately failed; however, many feel that this event played a role in helping continue population growth over time even though certain demographics have experience lower levels of economic security today[2].

In 1858, the California Gold Rush began and soon became one of the most prosperous times in California history. The area that is now Imperial was part of Mexican territory until 1848 when it was acquired by the United States as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The initial population of Imperial was nothing more than a small ranch town with a few hundred residents. However, over time, the town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and its location on the highway connecting Mexico City with San Francisco. By 1870, Imperial had a population of 10,000 people and was being called "the most important city in Mexico."
