In 1849 US Commodore John Doolittle landed here on his way back from China after making landfall off Japan's coast as part of Admiral Dewey's First Opium War against Qing Dynasty China. On July 26th, 1853 Californian patriot Josiah Cranch made an unsuccessful attempt on Mount Diablo while leading a small party overland through this region including parts of today’s Marin County and Contra Costa Counties; he had earlier won fame as one of General Mariano Salinas' personal bodyguards during his successful revolt against Spanish rule in Mexico City

The history of Imperial, California dates back to the time of the Spanish Empire. In 1821, Mexico acquired California from Spain and established their own government in what is now southern California. The Mexican population was sparse, and few Europeans were allowed to settle in what is now Imperial County. The area was first called Rancho San Francisco de Asís, but it was changed to Imperial in 1835 because of its distance from other Californias. Imperial began as a small rancho on the slopes of Mount Shasta. Over time, the ranchos grew larger and more ambitious, annexing adjacent ranges and districts until they controlled much of present-day Southern California. Their landholdings swelled as they became wealthy by trading with Asia and Europe for goods brought overland by travelers on the American road network. In 1849, after several years of wrangling with the United States over boundary changes around Los Angeles, Mexico ceded control of all but a tiny corner of California north of Bakersfield to America at the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This left many Mexicans behind in what is now Southern California – some 15 percent or so of whom lived in Imperial County at that time (though there were also substantial numbers living near downtown LOS ANGELES). The new American government decided that this group should be given a better chance than others to develop their lands while still under American rule. So instead of selling them off piecemeal like previous administrations had done, Congress passed an act creating AGRICULTURE AND INDUSTRIAL DISTRIBUTION ACT OF 1850 which allocated $5 million for communal development throughout all “the western states” including Imperial County…thus fulfilling one half century’s dreamized vision that Americans would give these settlers a hand up rather than let them fall into ruin . It wasn’t until 1862 when US General George Armstrong Custer came through Central Valley on his way north during the Civil War and discovered large herds Of sheep on ranchos owned by José Joaquín Mora y Salinas – making him one step closer to becoming Emperor Pedro Menem (1946-1989) who created Chávez state out of part today’s Simi Hills
In 1871, the first white men set foot in Imperial County, California. The area was part of Spanish land grant Rancho San José de las Flores. In 1876, a group of American miners discovered gold in the area and began to explore it. By 1880, over 1,000 people were living in Imperial County. In 1892, the United States Naval Forces invaded Mexico to suppress a revolt against US rule there and seized control of much of Central America including Imperial County; this event is often called the Mexican-American War. In 1902, an act was passed by Congress which created the Department of Immigration and Naturalization to help sponsor new immigrants into America. This department helped to grow Imperial County through its vigorous agriculture and mining industries. The county seat from 1889 until 1907 was Tomales; when that city was destroyed by fire in 1907, Tomales became the new county seat. From 1909 until 1913 it was located at Lompoc; when that city also burned down in 1913, Lompoc became the new county seat again.
