For many years this co-operative operated as one giant supermarket chain across all of Southern California A fire destroyed much of downtown San Bernardino in 1906; but due to quick response from citizens, business continued operations until early Sunday morning when all but four stores were closed by order of Mayor Willis Haggerty due to lack of insurance coverage vernacular dance halls such as Biltmore Ballroom and Laughlin Hall remain today reminders of what could have been had these institutions not gone out entirely during those days In 1957, Chasen's department store opened its doors in Downtown San Bernardino; becoming one of the few remaining local anchors still open today During World War II (1939-1945), over 20% of employed workers within the city were involved with military production including 10% being civilians working at munitions plants or elsewhere within government hands Additionally over 100 businesses were either bombed or destroyed within downtown area during 1945-1946 raids by Army Air Forces bombers resulting in high civilian casualties
