Huntington Park is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 21,624 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Bernardino County. The first permanent settler in what would become Huntington Park was Lorenzo Snow on November 6, 1866. The town was named for General George Washington Huntington who served as Commandant of the 1st California Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Mexican-American War and later became an American politician and Territorial Governor of California. In 1868, when the original town site was surveyed, it was found to be only two blocks wide by one block long and consisted of just a few houses. A new courthouse and jail were built in 1870 to serve as courtrooms for both townsite residents and surrounding rural areas. In 1875, Huntington Park became part of Rancho Cucamonga which included most of central San Bernardino County including present-day Brentwood, Midway City and other villages now within Pasadena metropolitan area). In 1886 when Rancho Cucamonga merged into Riverside County (later renamed Riverside), Huntington Park remained within Riverside County until 1912 when it joined with El Monte to form El Monte Municipal District No. 2 (now known as East Los Angeles) which in turn became incorporated as a city on November 3, 1915 by an act of the State Legislature under the name "Huntington Park". The change from "municipality" to "city" reflected growing commercial interests within its borders due to its location atened along major freeways such as Interstate 10 (then known as US 95) making it easy access to resources throughout Southern California. After World War II ended hostilities in Asia and Japan destroyed vast portions of their home countries' populations centers— resulting in massive waves replacement migration within those regions—El Monte began experiencing heavy Japanese immigration with consequent growth in land values so much so that by 1980 total Japanese ancestry stood at over 50%. In 1912 the city became part of Riverside County when it was annexed by Riverside. The city has experienced slight growth throughout its history; however annexation has not led to an increase in residents because there are other municipalities with much larger populations within Riverside County that offer more services and opportunities for residents than does Huntington Park. One reason for this lack of growth may be due to two factors: 1) the presence of other major metropolitan areas within easy driving distance (Riverside and San Bernardino counties have a combined population of over 650,000), which limits opportunities for people to move into or out of town; and 2) high rates for housing which often dissuade people from moving to smaller towns or cities when they can find better deals elsewhere. In recent years some redevelopment efforts have been made in order to lure new businesses and residents alike but those efforts have so far failed to result in significant changes in either demographics or patterns of economic activity within the City Limits neighborhood adjacent to downtown where many district-based businesses remain unchanged since before annexation by neighboring cities decades ago while DowntownHuntingtonPark undergoes continuous transformation characterized by increasing levels Of commercialidency with both residential usage & nonresidential uses becoming increasingly mixed
