The community was founded in 1887 by John W. Huntington and his family as a result of their land holdings near Los Angeles. The name "Huntington Park" was chosen because it means "place where game is plentiful." The first store in Huntington Park was opened in 1888 by Mr. Huntington's son-in-law, Elisha Radcliffe. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt made Huntington Park a municipal city with full voting rights under state law; this marked an important milestone for the town because it demonstrated that local government could play an important role in creating a strong community spirit and economy. During World War II, businesses such as Ford Motor Company (now Ford) moved their plants into Huntington Park from other parts of Southern California due to its strategic location near Los Angeles and points north. Many of these companies remain headquartered in or have operations located within Huntington Park today including Google Fiber and Lockheed Martin Space Co., among others. The city experienced significant growth during the late 1960s through 1970s when it became home to many industries such as aerospace engineering, semiconductor manufacturing and health care services thanks to Interstate 10 being constructed nearby (I-10 also forms much of southern San Bernardino County). However, most recently there has been little major development taking place within or around downtown since 2000 due largely to increased competition from Riverside County outside of town while job-creation opportunities have been limited throughout much of Orange County by ensuing economic recessionary conditions which have affected both cities along I-10 corridor more broadly than Huntington Park specifically
