Huntington Park is a city located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 91,856 as of the 2010 census. It is home to the American Red Cross and other local organizations. The city was founded in 1887 by farmers who purchased land from the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel and built a small town on the east side of what is now Huntington Park. In 1933, it merged with Riverside to form one municipality. The history of Huntington Park dates back to 1887 when farmers purchased land from Mission San Gabriel Arcángel for $1 per acre (citation needed). They named their new town after General John Brougham, an officer in the Mexican-American War and United States Representative from California. By 1893, most of the original settlers had left for various reasons: lack of available water, high prices for crops yielded by newly wetland territory, or fear that annexation by Riverside would result in competition for jobs and business opportunities within their new city limits. In 1933, Bridgeport Township merged with Huntington Park to form one municipality. As a result of this merger and growth within both municipalities, streets were re-named following similar naming conventions used within each community: First Street became Hwy 1; Second Street became Euclid Avenue; Third Street became Wilson Boulevard; Fourth Street became Orange Grove Boulevard; Fifth Avenue became Spring Valley Road; Sixth Avenue became Indian Wells Road. During World War II (1939-1945), many businesses closed due to rationing which caused trade rates among businesses in town to drop 50%. However, many residents still managed to keep their homes heated over open fires during these difficult times. One resident even went so far as to build an outdoor stove out his front porch which he used until 1940 when he moved into his current home near I-15/Highway 68 southbound! That same year saw another milestone for Huntington Park as it lost its status as a township but instead achieved city status under Mayor Harry Sizemore’s leadership. For years afterwards Mayor Sizemore championed downtown development which has led to today’s vibrant commercial district with numerous restaurants and nightlife options including several movie theatres located just north of I-15/Highway 68 southbound on Orange Grove Boulevard between Wilson Boulevard and Spring Valley Road
