Huntington Park is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 38,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino metropolitan area. Huntington Park was founded in 1872 by Hiram Maxim and his wife Fanny Hill as a cattle ranch on the eastern edge of what is now Riverside County. The city became an agricultural center during the 20th century with large production of grapes, almonds, tomatoes and other vegetables. In recent years, Huntington Park has become a bedroom community for many people within the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The original town site was located in what is now southern Riverside County on high ground overlooking Antelope Valley National Grassland and irrigated farmland to the south and east. A post office called "Huntington" was established in 1872, but no town developed until 1884 when shoe store owner John Witherspoon donated land to make a town square. Witherspoon named it after himself, Samuel Huntington (1811-1892), one of his business partners from Boston who had come to live in San Bernardino County during the Gold Rush days and discovered silver mines there. In 1886-87 three men waterlogged their way through miles of desert sand to build what is now downtown Huntington Park from scratch using only their feet and wagons (the first recorded instance of publicewateration in Southern California). The first store opened at 910 S 4th St., which would remain taggin' home until 1907 when J F Hutton & Sons moved into larger quarters at 1020 S 4th St., becoming one of America's largest grocery stores with more than 1 million sq ft (891 m²) inside its walls at its peak in 1912! And just like that – Downtown HuntingtonPark had arrived! Downtown businesses downtown included banks/ Credits Union Bank/First National Bank Of Commerce (founded 1888), Ivey's Clothing Store (), two insurance companies - Farmers Insurance Company (founded 1889) and Standard Oil Company Insurance Company (founded 1893), Masonic Lodge No 2 AHP #2118 Knights Templar (#2762), Pritchett's Department Store (), Elks Club #4659 lodge hall where today you can find many artifacts including several pieces made by Ford Motor Co., among others ! Just off Main Street corner High Street stood JF Hutton’s Pharmacy where Mrs Roosevelt gave her Address while she ate lunch on October 16th 1928 while visiting Southern California
